From the Author

Thanks for your interest in Examination Review for Ultrasound: Abdomen & Obstetrics and Gynecology. Though it contains information that may be used by educators in the classroom, students, sonographers, or interpreting physicians, the primary goal of this book is to provide individuals a tool to effectively prepare for the certification examinations offered by the ARDMS and ARRT in the specialities of Abdomen & Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN).In the front of each chapter you will find helpful terms with definitions. Throughout the chapters there are beneficial tables that contain both clinical and sonographic findings. This format allows for a quick, and yet thorough review. The narrative is easy to read and only contains the most vital facts about the topics. Unlike many review books, it contains valuable diagrams and sonographic images as well. The book has review questions within it, and the online component consists of over 800 intense mock-registry questions with rationales, an image bank, and PowerPoint presentations for instructors. As a sonographer, I greatly value the goals you have set for yourself. I hope that, even if you do not choose to use this book, you achieve them.Steven M. I just passed the ARDMS abdomen registry and used this book to review. I really liked the layout of the book, it has defintions at the beginning of each chapter which I thought were a very helpful review. It also did a good job of outlining clinical and sonographic findings associated with pathology. Overall this book highlighted the main topics that were on my exam. I also used my class powerpoint notes and old tests to study. Every person's test is different but I thought my particular test was much easier than the SPI and I finished in 1.5 hours with 1.5 hours to spare (and that was looking over every answer before submitting). My test was MOSTLY liver, abdominal vasculature, kidney, and testicular images/questions. Several gallbladder, bile duct, and pancreas questions. Very few spleen, adrenal, prostate, physics, thyroid, and parathyroid questions/images. Only 3 GI questions (Appendicitis image, pyloric stenosis image, and intusseception question. 1 abdominal wall identification image (of rectus abdominis). No MSK. Know the labs associated with the pathologies (i.e. ALT, AST, ALK Phos, Bilirubin, Alpha-fetaprotein, Lipase, BUN, Creatine, etc.). I had several landmark questions (main lobar fissure, ligamentum venosum, ligamentum teres, etc.). I had NO normal measurment questions on my exam. I thought the images I had on my exam were very easy to interpret. I had heard the image quality was poor so I was worried about that but the images I had were very straightfoward. I studied for 2 weeks and passed with 655. Good luck!

For the ARRT:I took this board first. This book along with the questions is all you'll need to pass the abdomen and OB/GYN section. I recommend Edelmen's Understanding Ultrasound Physics for the physics portion, but if you have a physics book preference it is probably fine. Don't stress too much over physics, the physics portion is a LOT easier than the SPI. During the test I did feel like at one point there was a possibility that I failed, but I was more certian that I passed. I ended up passing everything with flying colors. For ARDMS Abdomen:I did pass. I also had Davis software that had a bunch of questions that I also used to study for the test. Still, with the questions and what the book offers, and I feel like I should have had a little more. There was a looooot of little specifc/niche things on the test I don't remember ever hearing about in clinical, the book, or in the Davis questions. It could have just been my test, but my test has a lot about niche specific abnormalities in the digestive tract/abdominal wall masses. I remember at one point just kinda thinking it'll suck when I have to pay to retake the test because I failed, but at least I'll know what to expect for next time. When I got my results I was shocked I passed.I know the ARDMS SPI made a lot of people feel like that, but I dunno about abdomen. I remember feeling like I probably passed for my SPI, I was definitely more uncertain with this test.Overall, I think this book is a great tool, espicially if you need a general review of everything (like for ARRT). It really does a good job of breaking things down and making information easy to process. I recommend if you're going for ARDMS abdomen and if you're struggling to grasps some concepts like anatomy/function and some of the major/more common abnormal findings to pick this book up. It's definitely just a great overall reference to have.Good luck to whoever still needs to take their boards! Study hard!

This book was very helpful in studying for the Abdomen Registry! It puts everything into short concise easy to understand sections. It has helpful charts at the end of each section which help you highlight the important information. If you want just ONE book to study from I would probably recommend this over Edelman cards because it goes more into depth and gives you a little background on each organ and topic, highlights and defines medical terms etc. However, I am not sure if using this book alone would be enough to pass. Although this book was extremely helpful and I would definitely recommend it (I passed my registry on the first try), I did not solely use this book. I also used Edelman's cards, Appleton and Lange questions (only) and looked at images from school. Although i did rely on this book heavily and it did it definitely helped me pass, after having taken the registry I see i could have been a little more prepared. I would definitely recommend this book if it was the only thing you were studying from because it summarizes everything very clearly so you do not need to go back and re-read all your notes and everything that you did in school. But in my opinion, if you want to be extra ready for the registry then you need to add another source besides this book. Overall definitely a THE GO-TO BOOK in order to pass, a good summary and a must to study for the registry!

I just completed my Abd/ OB/ Gyn exams and used this book solely for my preparation. It has great charts for lab values, pathology findings, sonographic findings, definitions at the beginning of each chapter as well as a chapter review. One of the most helpful parts of purchasing this book is the access you receive to the online testing question bank. You will receive a scratch off code inside the front cover and have access to the testing material for 2 years!! These questions are different from the ones inside the book to give you extra preparation for the actual test. It has all sections of the registry to include protocols, physics, positioning, patient care, pathology, and anatomy. If you are looking for a to the point review book this is for you! No extra information to add to the confusion. All around useful tool!

This book helped me study to take the ARRT sonography exam. It lays out all the information you need to know and puts it in a way thats easy to understand and study. Definitely get this book to help you pass the ARRT exam.
