Afro-Latin America: Black Lives, 1600-2000 (The Nathan I. Huggins Lectures)By George Reid Andrews

Of the almost 11 million Africans who came to the Americas between 1500 and 1870, two-thirds came to Spanish America and Brazil. Over four centuries, Africans and their descendants―both free and enslaved―participated in the political, social, and cultural movements that indelibly shaped their countries’ colonial and post-independence pasts. Yet until very recently Afro-Latin Americans were conspicuously excluded from narratives of their hemisphere’s history.

George Reid Andrews seeks to redress this damaging omission by making visible the past and present lives and labors of black Latin Americans in their New World home. He cogently reconstructs the Afro-Latin heritage from the paper trail of slavery and freedom, from the testimonies of individual black men and women, from the writings of visiting African-Americans, and from the efforts of activists and scholars of the twentieth century to bring the Afro-Latin heritage fully into public view.

While most Latin American countries have acknowledged the legacy of slavery, the story still told throughout the region is one of “racial democracy”―the supposedly successful integration and acceptance of African descendants into society. From the 1970s to today, black civil rights movements have challenged that narrative and demanded that its promises of racial equality be made real. They have also called for fuller acknowledgment of Afro-Latin Americans’ centrality in their countries’ national histories. Afro-Latin America brings that story up to the present, examining debates currently taking place throughout the region on how best to achieve genuine racial equality.

Review
Black lives matter in Latin American history. Reid Andrews gives us the state of the art, and then probes beyond it. This is classic Andrews, hands on the evidence, head around the big picture, a lover of paradox. Both a masterful introduction for the newly curious and a master class for old hands like me. (John Charles Chasteen, author of Born in Blood and Fire: A Concise History of Latin America)

Beautifully written by an eminent scholar, Afro-Latin America provides readers with new approaches to understanding the African diaspora in the Americas. George Reid Andrews masterfully shows that there is no area of the hemisphere that has not been touched by people of African descent. (Jeffrey Lesser, author of Immigration, Ethnicity, and National Identity in Brazil)

From the Back Cover

"When I was a boy, I cried. But now I see it well." Steve Saint was only five years old when his father was brutally killed by Waodani warriors, men from the most savage culture ever known. But in a story almost too amazing to be true, Steve eventually comes to know-and even love-the very ones who drove the spears into his father's body. Decades after their lives were changed by learning to walk God's trail, the Waodani asked Steve to return to the jungle with his family to live among them again and teach them how to interact with the encroaching outside world. Striving to mesh his two very different worlds, Steve must face the tragic events of his past and learn to fully trust God through terrible danger, great loss, and remarkable joy.

About the Author

Steve Saint grew up in Ecuador in close community with the Waodani. His father, Nate Saint, was one of five missionaries martyred in their attempt to befriend the Waodani. After graduating from Wheaton College, Steve launched several successful businesses. He has also been a missionary in West Africa, Central America, and South America. At the request of the Waodani elders, he returned to the Amazon in 1995 along with his family. Steve's experiences living in the jungle led him to establish I-TEC, a nonprofit organization that assists the "hidden church" in its journey toward independence, self-sustenance, and maturity.

I had previously read several of the books written by some of the widows of the five missionaries who were speared to death in the Ecuador jungle while trying to reach indigenous tribes for Christ. The story of the five missionaries touched the hearts of many, many people around the world. I was deeply touched by the story of what happened in the jungles of Ecuador to these five young men seeking to serve and obey God's calling on their lives. I was very pleased to come across Steve Saint's book. I felt like it was the next "chapter" in the story that continues long after the deaths of the five missionaries. Steve's story shows that the deaths of the missionaries were not in vain. He shares how the door was opened for his Aunt Rachel to live among and minister to the Waodani Indians for many decades. Amazingly, Steve feels the call of God on his life to take his wife and children and live among the very people who were responsible for his father's and the other four missionaries deaths. Although, he struggles greatly with this decision, as does his wife, they are obedient to God and move to the Amazon to live among the Waodani. It's amazing to me how Steve and his family were so loved and accepted by the Waodani and how they come to love these precious people in return. To see how such people from two incredibly different worlds come together and accept each other as family is simply amazing and shows the strength of love and forgiveness in the human heart. I feel like reading this book gave me some sense of closure to what was such a tragic situation originally. To see how God worked through this tragedy to ultimately bring the gospel to the Waodani, demonstrates the biblical truth that what the devil meant for evil God turns around for good!!!!! To see how God healed the hearts of Steve and those affected by the deaths of the five missionaries and how they ultimately accepted this once brutal tribe into their hearts and lives shows the strength and power of God's love. Fantastic read which I recommend to all.

Have you ever read a book that touched you so deeply that you didn't want to start another because this one needed to sink in. That's how I feel about End of the Spear. It's the true story of Steve Saint's quest to help the native tribe of the Ecuadorian Amazon jungle, the very people who killed his father, adapt to an ever encroaching world threatening to destroy them. Mr. Saint had his faith, courage and his stamina tested to the limit several times in the book and kept me turning page after page. He has an insight into the Waodani that literally no one else could have since he was raised with them from a young boy and they see him as family. The fate of the Waodani tribe hangs in the balance as he struggles to help them into, if not the 21st century, at least the 20th century. The writing style is different in that Mr. Saint jumps back and forth from present to past and sideways but it all works. I gave this book 5 stars and if you look at my reviews I don't often do that.

Steve wrote a fantastic, informative, insightful version of an already inspiring story. Sometimes I would think, "Do I really need to know all these itty-bitty details?" Yes, they are important to appreciate the complexity of problems or the humor of the moment. The best aspect of Steve's writing is that he's honest and unpretentious. He doesn't try to impress you with his literary skills, but stays focused on the mission of the book, sharing his experiences and struggles. Anthropologists with umpteen initials behind their names should humble themselves to learn from this book. It's not a book about the white imperialist spreading his religion, but about a committed Christian trying to give his extended family and community skills they need to survive.

This is a story almost too hard to beleive that it is true.Steve Saint is the son of martyred missionary Nate Saint who was killed by Waodani Warriors this book is about forgiveness and a love that is unexplainable if it wasn't for Christ.I got this book under collectible from I-TEC. Here is a ministry that Steve Saint founded it is the Indigenous People's Technology and Education Center. The copy I ordered was brand new it had two stickers in it one for Maverick the flying car the other for I-TEC it is also signed by Steve Saint along with Mincaye's one of the warriors who killed Nate Saint thumbprint in it also. This book will be a great blessing to you Thank you for taking time to read this review.Go to www.i-tecusa.org for more information on what they are trying to do.

This full story of how Steve Saint , and his aunt Rachel Saint, became a part of the Waoduani Indian tribe after the 5 missionaries were killed in the 1950s gives a clear account of how the Indians felt, who was accountable for spearings and how Rachel, Nate Saint's sister was allowed to live with them and translate the Bible into their language, bringing many to a knowledge of living for God instead of killing. Included is Steve's family who lived with the Waorani after Rachel's death in order to help them face the outside world and grow in their Christian life..

Our Daughter read this at age 11 when she was called to missions. Nate and Steve Saint have greatly influenced her. The original copy was lost in our moves and so I bought this for her for Christmas as she is about to embark on her life's next great mission and adventure. I read this to all of our children.
